Testimonial

From the NGO perspective, as well as providing funding, which is of course very important, we have greatly appreciated the active engagement of Toyota in the project. At times, this has included challenges to our strategy and planning which have helped us re-shape some activities, taking on board the Toyota motto of continuous improvement.

Schools for Sustainable Development

One of the key aims of Toyota is to make effective changes at grassroots level and to then achieve this at reasonable cost. Schools for Sustainable Development (SSD) is a good example of a programme where communities can implement practical improvements to their neighbourhoods everyone to enjoy ; for instance, by improving or creating garden spaces, building playgrounds or by helping with heritage projects.
SSD is a joint programme, developed by the partner organisations and Toyota – one of t he most long-lasting projects of TFfE. The programme principally aims to promote:
  • Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at schools
  • Environmental projects for the local community

Additional to the financial support, participating schools and communities benefit from the following:
  • They receive technical and organisational support during the entire development of the project;
  • Participate in workshops and seminars;
  • Take part in regional conferences, study trips and other events;
  • Are able to exchange project ideas and experiences with other programme participants (also via the website) and participate in meetings with experts as part of the SSD network.

There has been a particularly strong commitment and support from local Toyota subsidiaries for this programme. Toyota has been, and remains, involved in every stage of the projects, from planning to completion, contributing its expertise and resources to the schools and local communities.

Results

  • Over 30 workshops were organised for nearly 600 school teachers and community leaders
  • More than 100 projects were implemented, involving over 6000 people

Next steps
The programme in its 5th consecutive year and we think it is right time to review the programme, looking back those 5 years – what did we achieve? What do we still miss? What can we do to make this programme stronger. With our partners, we are planning to make a big step forward in 2009.
