During Earth Hour, citizens and businesses are encouraged to turn off non-essential lighting for sixty minutes to demonstrate their concern over global warming. Toyota Bulgaria and its dealer network actively participated in this campaign by switching off the lights of their showrooms and brand signs. Toyota Bulgaria also popularised Earth Hour among its employees, customers and business partners throughout the country and financed part of the outdoor advertising for the iniative. As a token of their appreciation, WWF awarded Toyota Bulgaria a special certificate which recognised them as WWF’s best business partner for the event.
Bulgaria joined Earth Hour for the first time in 2009. Over 40 Bulgarian towns participated, turning off the lights on landmark buildings and monuments. According to WWF, consumption of electricity in Bulgaria dropped by 22 MWh, indicating that around 370,000 standard 60 watt light bulbs were switched off during the hour. WWF believe this indicates that between 60,000 and 90,000 households representing 180,000 to 270,000 people participated in the event.
