Toyota's Forest Troops Plant 19,000 Trees in Two Days - Portugal

Toyota Caetano Portugal (TCP) has announced the successful completion of its fourth tree planting as part of the Um Toyota, Uma Árvore (One Toyota, One Tree) programme. One Toyota, One Tree was started by TCP in 2005 in response to the forest fires that devastated parts of Portugal. The programme aims to plant a tree for every vehicle sold by Toyota Portugal.

The 2008 event took place on 4 December at Guarda and 11 December at Pombal. Volunteers planted a total of 19,000 trees during the two days. At each location, the President of the local authority planted the first symbolic tree. The volunteers were young students who had agreed to participate in Toyota Portugal’s Forest Troops environmental action programme.

The first plantings took place on 4 December at Guarda, near mainland Portugal’s highest point in the Serra de Estrela mountain range. More than 9,000 trees were planted by 50 of the Forest Troop volunteers.

A week later the second planting took place at Pombal, an area recently destroyed by forest fires. Around 10,000 trees were planted in this location by the Forest Troops with the help of an additional 150 volunteers.

TCP organises the One Toyota, One Tree campaign each year in conjunction with Portugal’s National Association for Environment, Agriculture and Forestry Companies (AFENA). With their help, Toyota identifies forest areas that would benefit from tree planting. TCP also looks after the young trees until they become established.
