Record Number of Polish Schools Receive Sustainable Development Awards

Forty-six Polish schools and teachers have received awards during the eighth annual Schools for Sustainable Development conference which was held in Wroclaw, Poland on 7 September 2009. Twenty-nine schools received the title of Local Centre for Environmental Activity (LCEA), while 17 received the International Green Flag. In 2008, just four LCEAs and seven Green Flags went to Polish schools.

During the conference, a panel of international experts outlined the challenges and prospects for sustainable development education in Poland and the rest of the world. A number of “Green Happenings” were also organised, enabling visitors to measure their carbon footprint.

International guests at the conference, together with representatives from the Polish Environmental Partnership Foundation, visited a primary school in Wojcice which received a Green Flag award this year. This small school in the forest is situated near the Toyota plant at Jelcz Laskowice. Together with Toyota, parents and the local community have created a 25 hectare green area at the school. The area has been planted with trees, benches and playground equipment have been installed, and paths have been created so that the students and local community can enjoy the green space.
