Eco-Schools is a programme that encourages children to identify and solve environmental issues near their schools. The third cycle of the competition is being run in Denmark and Slovenia during the 2009/10 academic year with the theme: Climate Change: Let’s Save Energy.

In Denmark, the winning school is Eltang Centralskole with a project to raise awareness of energy consumption. Different items at the school are fitted with a smart code that can be detected by a mobile telephone camera. The telephone reads the code and displays information on the environmental impact of that particular item.
A local Toyota retailer agreed to be used as a testing ground for the project.

The winning Slovenian school is Osnovna šola Vojke Šmuc Izola. Their project aims to reduce water usage at the school by recycling waste water. A 10-year old in the seventh grade came up with the idea of installing a pump to facilitate the water recycling. To date the pump has saved over 800 litres of water and the local municipality is now interested in implementing a similar scheme in their offices.
