McKenzy Haber Wins Toyota’s Eco-Driving Challenge at 12 Years of Age

McKenzy Haber, aged just 12, has emerged as the winner of Toyota’s Eco-Driving Challenge held during the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) conference in Barcelona. But McKenzy didn’t just finish first, he also held third, fifth, seventh and eighth places in the Challenge.

Describing the aim of the simulator, McKenzy said: “You’re trying to drive economically, so reduce the gas usage and reduce the emissions you put out.” And his top tip for driving economically? “Shift when it gets to 2,000 revolutions!”

According to his mother, McKenzy continues to pass on the eco-driving message: “He has been coaching me on optimising my driving habits for maximum conservation since we returned from Barcelona. Toyota is changing my world through McKenzy’s new knowledge. I am grateful for your message of how easy it is to make changes in our interdependent, interconnected, inter-generational world.” McKenzy has also presented a video of his achievement to 40 of his 7th grade classmates in California.

President of IUCN Mr Valli Moosa kicked off Toyota’s eco-driving competition at the beginning of IUCN using the specially designed simulator. Over the course of IUCN, from 5 to 14 October, approximately 500 people used the simulator to learn ecological and economic driving techniques. The competition was organised with the support of Global Action Plan Spain (Plan de Accion Global), one of Toyota’s partner NGOs.
