As well as a 20 minute practice drive, students also had to change a wheel, check the oil in their vehicle and use a satellite navigation system to locate three routes. Other practical exercises included wearing beer goggles to simulate the effect of alcohol on driving.
The students also receive a two hour talk on road safety from the local police and then spend time in court watching traffic cases. The court experience helps them to understand the consequences of driving irresponsibly. Other classes cover buying and insuring a car and how to budget running costs.
At the end of the course the students receive a certificate of achievement and a complimentary driving lesson.
The Irish School of Excellence is supported by Toyota Ireland and the Toyota Fund for Europe. It is the largest driver education programme in Ireland.
