Arbour Day Celebrations Support Plant for the Planet - Berlin

Plant for the Planet’s ambitious goal to plant 100,000 trees in the Berlin area was launched on 25 April 2009 in conjunction with celebrations to mark Arbour Day. Taking part in the event were Plant for the Planet (PftP), Toyota Deutschland GmbH (TDG) and Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (SWD), a German NGO that has more than 60 years experience in campaigning for forest preservation.

During the Arbour Day celebrations, three trees were planted in a park near the Bundestag, the German Parliament building. The trees are just the first of 100,000 that will be planted in the Berlin metropolitan area by local school children in cooperation with Toyota’s Berlin dealers and the Evangelische Schule Berlin Mitte.

The planting was overseen by Dirk Steffens, a well known journalist and presenter of nature documentaries on German television. Also in attendance were Felix Finkbeiner (founder of PftP), Dr Wolfgang von Geldern (President of SWD), Lothar Feuser (Managing Director of TDG), Elmar Lakenberg (from the Berlin forestry office), and around 40 children from four of the participating Berlin schools. Berlino, the official mascot of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships, also made an appearance. The Championships will be held from 15 to 23 August 2009 in Berlin and will highlight the work of PftP. TDG and Deutsche Post are also sponsors of the Championships.
