After an informative tour of the island’s forest, the staff of the Forest Administration distributed birdhouses to the Toyota group. The volunteers spent the rest of the morning climbing into trees to hang the birdhouses. The group spent the second half of the day planting trees on the island. More than 185 olive trees were planted, each in the name of a Toyotasa employee. Olive trees were selected for this project as they are one of the most suitable for Princess Island’s ecosystem.
Princess Island is the largest of four of the islands in Marmara Sea. The island’s ecosystem is quite rich in biodiversity and its forests are carefully preserved by the Forest Administration. Istanbul, where Toyotasa Turkey has its head office, is situated on the shores of the Marmara Sea.
Toyotasa has cooperated on a number of projects with WWF Turkey since 2008, including support for WWF’s Forest Protection Programme. A guide to forest protection has been also been published. The guide is used by the Ministry of Environment to develop the skills of ministry personnel in charge of forest protection and protected areas and related institutions including local NGOs.
