The 2010 European Road Safety Days were held on 13 and 14 October. To celebrate the event, the Directorate-General of Mobility and Transport and the Belgian government (which currently holds the rotating European Union Presidency) invited a number of NGOs to present their road safety activities. The event was held in a special Road Safety Village established in front of the European Parliament in Brussels.
One of the invited NGOs was TOP-25, a pan-European programme to improve driving skills using interactive tools. TOP-25 brought their Toyota Corolla Verso driving simulator to the village. Since its creation in 2008, the simulator has toured road safety events across Europe where it has been utilised by thousands of people. More than 1,000 Belgian students and over 250 European road-safety professionals visited the TOP-25 tent over the two days.
TOP-25 began in 2006 when the AlcoKart simulator was developed. The AlcoKart resembles a go-cart, and simulates the effect of impaired driving, in real time. Whilst sober, the driver experiences what it feels like to be behind the wheel under influence of alcohol or drugs. A Driver Simulator was added to the TOP-25 programme in 2008. TOP-25 is actively supported by the Toyota Fund for Europe (TFfE) and Toyota Motor Europe (TME).
