During her presentation to the NGO Forum, Pereira outlined the goals and reach of the Eco-Schools programme. Eco-Schools has now been implemented around the world, and the number of countries participating grows by three or four each year. The programme has been implemented successfully in schools with a wide range of cultures and educational systems.

The Eco-Schools programme, which is proudly supported by the Toyota Fund for Europe (TFfE), enables children to improve the environment by planning and implementing their own creative ideas. The Eco-Schools Programme and its activities were presented at the NGO Forum as well as in the Congress Stand Exhibition.

The theme for the 5th Congress was “Earth as our common home.” The event examined the contributions that environmental education initiatives, such as Eco-Schools, can make. A number of organisations, including Eco-Schools, signed the Biodiversity declaration by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity during the Congress.

The World Environmental Education Congress is coordinated by the Secretariat of the World Environmental Education Congresses (WEEC). One of WEEC’s aims is to promote the role environmental education plays in developing and enriching human identity and constructing more healthy individuals, communities, and societies. WEEC also seeks to emphasise the role environmental education can play in public policy development, and how public policy can strengthen environmental education.
