Six of Toyota’s European facilities are now powered solely from renewable sources. Initiatives such as this have seen total CO2 emissions from operations fall 17% from 588,066 tonnes in the 2007 fiscal year (April 2007 – March 2008) to 485,230 tonnes in the 2008 fiscal year (April 2008 – March 2009). All of Toyota’s European operations have achieved ISO 14001 certification – the international reference in environmental management.
Fleet-average CO2 emissions on new Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in the EU-15 countries have shrunk by almost 4% from 150.7 g/km to 145.3 g/km. The reduction in tailpipe emissions is attributed in part to the introduction of advanced environmental technologies such as Toyota Optimal Drive and Hybrid Synergy Drive. Compact, low-emission vehicles comprised almost one-third of Toyota brand sales in Europe in the 2008 fiscal year.
“Despite the current economic climate we are convinced that the fundamental environmental and social principles that we have introduced in the past years will help us to become even stronger and enable us to grow in harmony with society and nature,” commented Takamasa Kurinami, Senior Vice President CP, CSR, Legal and Environmental Affairs for TME.
