Toyota Manufacturing Plant Employees Support Community Projects
Toyota Motor Europe believes contributing to the local communities around our operations is an important part of our commitment to be a good corporate neighbour, even more so in economically challenging times. In October 2008, the Toyota Fund for Europe (TFfE) allocated €42,000 to four projects in Poland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. All involve Toyota volunteers and their families together with local residents, community organisations, and local governments.
Poland
In Poland, each of the two plants is involved in the renovation of a local recreational area: Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland in the Ptasia Kopa biking and running trail near Walbrzych and Toyota Motor Industries Poland in two public green areas of Leg and Miloszyce.
At Ptasia Kopa, approximately fifty Toyota employees will be involved in planting activities and the preparation of a biking and running trail. In total, 200 bushes will planted to encourage nesting birds and 8.3 km of trails will be cleaned up. On 25 July the renovation of the Ptasia Kopa biking and running trails will be officially opened during a picnic arranged for local community, TMMP employees and their families.
During July and August 2009, Toyota Motor Industries Poland (TMIP) will organise the renovation of two public green areas for the residents of the local villages of Leg and Miloszyce. The project is being coordinated with the mayors of both villages and the district of Olawa. Around 50 TIMP staff and members of the local communities will be involved in renovating existing playgrounds, renovating old equipment and installing new facilities. A small opening event will be held once the work is complete.
Turkey
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (TMMT) has repeated its successful technical competition in 2009. The project aims to interest young people in technical research and development. During the competition, students submit ideas and are supported by Toyota employees to develop them into practical solutions. The theme of the 2009 competition was environment, energy saving and automation. 170 ideas were submitted and judged before the top 3 winners in each category were announced on 4 June.
United Kingdom
Toyota Motor United Kingdom (TMUK) employees have volunteered to create a number of Toyota Community Gardens in the area near the company’s office. Two projects have already been completed with others scheduled for later in 2009.
The two completed projects were undertaken in cooperation with TMUK employees and two local NGOs: the South Derbyshire Community Volunteer Service and Grow 2 Grow. In the first project, a team of Toyota workers have used the current production downturn as an opportunity to transform a community garden into the Homestart garden. The garden will be used to promote vegetable growing and healthy eating by Home-Start South Derbyshire. In the second project at a local day care centre for adults, volunteers have built raised beds and renovated the community areas of the centre’s garden.
