Water Forests
Severe environmental damage has occurred along the length of the Tajo and Guadiana rivers which run through central Spain and into Portugal. Much of the damage has been caused by Australian eucalyptus trees which were originally introduced to Spain to provide pulp for paper production. The eucalyptus trees have taken over in many places, choking out native plant species and affecting the natural biodiversity.
Since 2006, Toyota España (TES) has worked with the NGO WWF/Adena to reverse the damage at selected locations. TES and the other sponsors have provided both volunteer labour and financial assistance to WWF/Adena to help with their work. More than 200 volunteers have worked on the project including 50 TES employees and their families. In 2007, more than 15,000 trees and shrubs were planted.
