Testimonial

I think that the Our Landscape project was really appropriate for the target group. Realisation of the project shows us that in small towns and villages there are noticeable demands for unconventional educational activities. Thanks to Toyota’s contribution, the children were able to take part in these lessons. The results of the survey we did at the end of the Our Landscape project confirmed that the programme was very beneficial for the target group.

Our Landscape

The Our Landscape project was devised by Toyota Motor Industries Poland (TMIP) to increase the environmental awareness of its employees and the local community. Beginning in September 2007, a number of activities were held.

In October 2007 and again in September 2008, TMIP organised a company event titled “Clean Up the World”. During these activities, volunteer staff from TMIP removed rubbish from the forest near the TMIP facility in Jelcz-Laskowice. The staff were joined by members of the local community as well as their families and friends. In 2008 the volunteers also undertook tree planting along the western border of the TMIP plant. TMIP was extremely pleased that the number of volunteers increased by almost 400% between the first and second Clean Up the World days. More than 400 kg of waste was removed from the forest during the two days and almost 150 pine seedlings were planted.

Our Landscape activities were also held in local schools. These activities also included lessons and workshops for the students which focussed on increasing the students’ awareness of the amount of biodiversity in their local community and the influence that human beings have on the environment and climate change.

The lessons were divided into three main subject areas: Birds, Trees and Earth. Special educational materials were developed by the Lower Silesia Sustainable Development Foundation (DFE) and TMIP for use in the schools. Around 1,200 pupils from eight local schools took part in the lessons which were delivered by DFE volunteers. Over 100 lessons were held.

The programme ended in May 2009. However, TMIP intends to continue its work with the local community.

Results

A dedicated website (naszkrajobraz.eko.org.pl) has been created by DFE. The site contains information about the project and about the landscape of the Jelcz-Laskowice region where TMIP operates. The site includes a gallery of pictures taken during the lessons, workshops and the clean-up activities.
