Testimonial

I am very proud because this day represents a concrete, and at the same time symbolic moment of our everyday commitment to promote the respect for environment. It represents the real contribution that Toyota is making here in Italy to achieve our objective: to be good citizens of the world.
Said Mr M Takemoto, Chairman and CEO of TMI, during the event.

EcoTagliando

The EcoTagliando project, developed by Toyota Motor Italy (TMI), aims to minimise the impact of cars on the environment. The project achieves this goal in two different ways:

  1. By providing environmentally friendly maintenance of new vehicles in addition to the standard maintenance programme. Eco-maintenance utilises specially developed “green” spare parts, such as Iridio spark plugs and synthetic oils, which help to reduce the vehicle’s fuel consumption and emissions.

  2. Tree plantings that compensate for the CO2 emitted by the car in the 2,500 km following the Ecotagliando maintenance (customers can purchase an optional extension which covers the vehicle’s emissions for 12.500 km). Each car participating in the project is fitted with a sticker that shows it is part of EcoTagliando.

Eco-maintenance ensures that the car’s technical systems (including emissions systems) remain stable throughout the vehicle’s life. Customers also learn how they can maintain their car in the most eco-friendly way during its life. The use of environmentally friendly products during cleaning and the regular maintenance of the vehicle are just two of the ways the vehicle owner can reduce the impact of the vehicle.

For each EcoTagliando vehicle sold, a contribution is made to a common fund by TMI, the Toyota dealer and customer. The money collected is passed on to the Italian NGO, Lifegate, which utilises the funds to plant trees which offset the emissions of the vehicles. Around 10% of the plantings take place in Italy, with the remaining 90% dedicated to tree planting in Madagascar.

The first official tree planting ceremony in Italy took place in the Ticino Regional Park near Pavia in northern Italy on 9 June. Almost 120 Toyota staff, customers, students, media and local authority representatives took part in the tree planting.

Results

In the first phase of the project from October 2008 to March 2009, 18,000 eco-maintenance contracts were signed at Toyota dealerships throughout Italy. This represented around 12% of the maintenance carried out by Toyota in Italy. Toyota aims to increase this to 40,000 contracts by the time the second phase of the project is completed in March 2010.

Around one million square metres of forests have been planted in Italy and Madagascar, compensating for over 6.5 million kilograms of CO2. Almost 80% of the plantings took place in Madagascar with the remainder occurring in the Ticino Regional Park. By the end of the second phase in 2010 Toyota aims to have two million square metres of forest planted, saving more than 13 million kilograms of CO2.
