Foundation Ekocentrum

In November 2006, the city of Gothenburg, Sweden presented their International Environmental Award to Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC). The Award recognised Toyota’s contribution to environmental protection through the crucial development of the world’s first commercial hybrid car, the Toyota Prius. The Award of 1 million Swedish Kronor (approximately €107,000) was received.

TMC and Toyota Sweden decided to donate the entire prize to the Foundation Ekocentrum in Gothenburg. Ekocentrum, founded in 1933, is a non-governmental organisation with its roots in the Swedish environmental movement. The centre acts as a meeting place for scientists, industry, environmental organisations, schools, institutes, inventors, public administrations, politicians and the general public. Ekocentrum receives over 20,000 visitors a year, many of whom take part in short environmental awareness courses.

In addition, Toyota Sweden AB also decided to contribute €7,900 a year to assist the Ekocentrum in their work. The local Toyota dealer in Gothenburg also has given a  Toyota Prius car for free use  of the Ekocentrum’s staff.
