Toyota Forest in Bulgaria
In 2001 a strong storm destroyed two parcels of spruce forest in the Vitosha Nature Park situated near Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. The storm damaged the forest ecosystems and resulted in a mass outbreak of bark beetle that caused the death of more than 600 hectares of old growth spruce forests.
To help solve the problem, the Vitosha Initiative Group was established in 2007. Toyota Bulgaria was one of the first companies to support their efforts to save and restore the forest ecosystems. In the spring of 2007, Toyota “adopted” a parcel of 1.6 hectares of forest. The company provided both financial and human resources for the reforestation and to care for the newly planted forest.
In 2008, Toyota Bulgaria initiated a new project to develop a Toyota Green Place. Almost 10,000 trees were planted in an area of 2.5 hectares. Toyota also contributed by constructing new tourist infrastructure and by producing information materials about the problem of the spruce forests wither and the need for forest protection. Toyota employees took an active part in the project by volunteering for several tree-planting events. In October 2008, the Toyota Green Place was officially opened.
